An older couple traumatised by loss; an aspiring Jamaican musician making London his home in the post-war years; a teenage girl in Manchester working out where she fits in: the central characters created by this year’s panel of debut novelists are diverse. What the novels have in common is excellent writing and the excitement that their publication is creating.
